The Santa Cruz Geek Dinner serves as an informal gathering of like minded technology professionals and entrepreneurs in/around Santa Cruz who like to get together for food, drinks, fun and intelligent conversation with some truly amazing people. Though we spend @ an hour standing, chatting and mingling with each other at the start, we chose a dinner format as it provides the opportunity for people to sit, connect, flesh out ideas and form genuine relationships.
Each event tries to focus on something that will help push the Santa Cruz Geek community forward. What exactly this means is up to your own interpretation, but examples from previous events have been:
#1 November 30, 2007 – We gathered @ Center Street for the first time to meet and connect with other geeks.
#2 February 7, 2008 – We kicked off our own local flavor of geek dinners. We gathered, we drank, we ate, we geeked, we made friends. Friendships formed, startups are emerging.
#3 March 13, 2008 – Mayor Ryan Coonerty speaking about the future of Santa Cruz, different opportunities to get involved locally, and the importance our community will play in bringing more opportunity and innovation to the City.
#4 April 17, 2008 – Individuals stood up, introduced themselves and spoke on what they hoped to accomplish in 2008 and how others could help in achieving said goals.
#5 June 5, 2008 – It is official now … what we REALLY like to do at the Geek Dinners is connect and create/enhance relationships with other geeky folks. This was a slightly more intimate affair with some great conversations revolving around life and times among the geek chic in Santa Cruz.
#6 July 10, 2008 – Totally awe struck this time sitting back and thinking about the awesome things growing out of these dinners. Those we are most proud of (and that I can remember off hand right now) are 12seconds.tv, Freelance Camp this August 16th, the co-working Jelly @ Quiddities every 3rd Friday of the month and a permanent 10,000 square foot co-working space opening up this summer.
#7 September 4, 2008 – Geeks at the beach
#8 October 23, 2008 – Geeks in Space
#9 December 19, 2008 – Geeks @Nextspace
#10 January 15, 2009
#11 February 19, 2009
#12 March 19, 2009
… and they continue in 2012 and beyond
