NON PROFIT Co-Working

Public Group

Description

Co-working is an emerging trend for a new pattern for working. Typically, work-at-home professionals or independent contractors or people who travel frequently end up working in relative isolation. Co-working is the social gathering of a group of people, who are still working independently, but who share values and who are interested in the synergy that can happen from working with talented people in the same space.

Some co-working spaces were developed by nomadic internet entrepreneurs seeking an alternative to working in coffee shops and cafes, or isolation in home offices.

News

Business accelerators, business incubators and executive suites do not seem to fit into the co-working model, because they often miss the social, collaborative and informal aspects of the process, with management practices closer to that of a cooperative, including a focus on community rather than profit. Many of the co-working participants are also participants in Bar Camp and other related Open Source technology activities groups.

  • I would be interested.

  • Actually Next Space is a ”commercial” co working facility, and its great, we love it. What we discussed on Friday was a ”member” owned ”non profit” co working space with a focus MORE on community rather than profit.

Don’t get me wrong, I have no problems with profits, but quite a few people expressed an interest in a ”co op” type of facility here in Santa Cruz.

  • Isn’t that what NextSpace is doing?

  • Interesting idea. I work only 1 day/week from home which isn’t quite enough to switch to a co-working space. Still I’d love to see this idea take hold.

  • We started the conversation @cruzio last Friday about setting up a local non profit co working space in Santa Cruz, if your interested, join in the conversation, and lets see if we can get something going here.

From my previous space I had in Downtown (above Cruzio), you can get a space which can house 10 folks for around $1000- add in broadband $100, and everyone bring there own desk or folding table & chairs. That was in 2006, so we may be able to get an even bigger space for the same price. I know the (place where Cruzio is) building owners have space, and the building has Comcast, or Telco IP.

So if we can get 10 ”founding members” of the Santa Cruz space paying $100 a month, we can make this happen.

I am in for $100 a month, and I would mostly work on Fri, Sat and Sun only.

Looking forward to hearing about your ideas and needs for your start up.

    Thanks,
    Toby
